IN THE TRACE OF THE DISCOVERY OF COGNAC
“The Renorville chapel,
a unique heritage that has spanned the centuries”
According to archives dating back to the 12th century, the Renorville chapel was built at the request of Guillaume Taillefer, a pious knight who returned from the crusade.
Renorville was built in Angles, between Salles d'Angles and St Fort-sur-le Né, on the edge of a valley made up of meadows leading to the Renorville river "called miraculous", one of the small tributaries of the Né.
La découverte du vieillissement du Cognac
La légende raconte que c’est vers la fin du XVIème siècle, qu’un chevalier d’une grande renommée offrit deux barriques de son eau-de-vie aux moines de la chapelle de Renorville. Ce n’est alors qu’au XVIIème siècle, un matin d’avril, alors que les moines faisaient l’inventaire de la chapelle, qu’ils trouvèrent une barrique oubliée sous le cloître.
En enlevant la bonde, ils s’aperçurent qu’une grande partie de ce vin distillé s’était évaporée : La Part des Anges. Ils remontèrent le verre plongé dans la barrique, et sous leurs yeux ébahis, un miracle : l’eau-de-vie blanche était devenue Cognac. ».
Ainsi, dans la région, s’est perpétuée cette légende sur l’origine de « la découverte du vieillissement des eaux-de-vie de Cognac ».
